Title: Modeling lines
Publication Year: 2017
Description: Exactly 500 years ago, Nicolaus Copernicus drew a lattice of lines on a panel above the doorway to his rooms at Olsztyn Castle, then in Warmia. Although it has long been regarded as some kind of reflective vertical sundial, its exact purpose and techniques remained unknown. Our recent 3D model of the panel has been examined using modern methods of data analysis, has now solved the mystery: Copernicus created a heliograph to measure the longitudes of the Sun around the equinoxes. Copernicus had introduced new methods of observation at an early stage of the Scientific Revolution, but surprisingly did not refer to them in his principal work, De Revolutionibus. The data and modelling results of our analysis are made available in open access digital (Jupyter) notebooks. This notebook contains various modelling scenarios.
