Description

The archaeozoological data were retrieved from published archaeozoological bone assemblages from 401 sites in 18 countries, 296 of which are located in SE-Europe and 105 in SW-Asia. The data contain summary data for each site or archaeological sub-unit, taxon specific data of the sheep (Ovis aries) bones within each assemblage and osteometric data of single sheep bones (n = 14.218). Summary data comprise the amount of bones from domestic and wild ungulate animals (NISP < 2,1 million) to show the status of sheep within an assemblage. Ovis specific data are age and sex data, pathologies and horn forms in order to calculate age and sex profiles and make diachroncal and geographical changes visible. Osteometric data can be used to calculate statistical size data of sheep within any chosen sample and compare it through time and space.
